Gamma exposure (GEX), strike by strike

Dealers hedge the options they trade, and that hedging can slow price at some strikes and speed it up at others. MomoEdge's gamma exposure (GEX) tool estimates dealer gamma at every strike of a ticker, names the levels that matter and draws them on your chart.

The levels

The strikes worth knowing, named for you

Badges on the strike chart mark the levels traders watch. They are estimates of where hedging pressure sits, not lines price must respect.

Call wall

The strongest positive gamma above the price. Often read as a ceiling.

Put support

The strongest negative gamma below the price. Often read as a floor.

Gamma flip

The estimated price where total dealer gamma turns from positive to negative.

Magnet

The heavy strike between the wall and support that price tends to hold near in a pinned market.

On your chart

The levels drawn on the candles

The chart draws the latest call wall, gamma flip and put support as lines, where you already read price.

Market state

Calm, pinned or trending, at a glance

The panel sorts the ticker by how much of the gamma near the price is positive. More positive means hedging that leans against moves; less means hedging that goes with them.

Sample: 58% of the nearby gamma is positive, so the state reads Range, where price tends to move back and forth between the walls.

PRISM

Every strike, every expiry, on one grid

Each row is a strike and each column an expiration, with a total column. Every cell is calls minus puts for what you choose to show: GEX, vanna, open interest, volume, unusual volume, or today's trades read as bought or sold.

Sample grid. Green: the call side is bigger. Red: the put side. Deeper means bigger.

More than one picture

  • Change since open: marks the cells that changed most since the day's first save.
  • Replay: the grid as it was saved every 5 minutes over the last 5 sessions.
  • Confluence: SPX, SPY and QQQ side by side.
  • 0DTE: today's expiration, or the next one, on its own.
  • Today's trades: open interest is counted once a day; the grid can also count today's trades that filled at the bid or the ask, seen from the dealer's side.

Positioning and today

What was open this morning, and what traded since

Standard GEX rests on open interest, counted once a day, and on one assumption: that dealers are long calls and short puts. MomoEdge can set beside it the gamma of today's trades that could be read as bought or sold.

Open interest GEX

Sample. The positions standing at the start of the day.

Today's sided trades

Sample. Only today's trades that filled at the bid or the ask, seen from the dealer's side.

Both are estimates. Nobody can see dealers' real positions. When the long calls, short puts assumption is wrong at a strike, so is that strike's sign.

How fresh it is

Updated through the session

While the market is open, the levels and the grid reload on their own. Open interest is counted once a day, overnight.

~3 min

The GEX levels on the chart update about every 3 minutes while the market is open.

~30 s

The PRISM grid reloads about every 30 seconds during market hours.

5 sessions

Replay steps back through saves taken every 5 minutes.

A fast move can get ahead of the levels. They are estimates refreshed on a clock, not a feed of dealers' books.

Gamma exposure questions

What is gamma exposure (GEX)?

Dealers who trade options usually hedge them by trading the stock, and gamma measures how fast that hedge has to change as price moves. GEX adds it up at each strike. Where dealers are long gamma, their hedging tends to lean against a move; where they are short gamma, it tends to go with it.

What are the call wall, put support and gamma flip?

The call wall is the strongest positive gamma above the price, often read as a ceiling. Put support is the strongest negative gamma below it, often read as a floor. The gamma flip is the estimated price where total dealer gamma turns from positive to negative.

How is GEX different from options flow?

GEX is positioning: the options already open, and how dealers may hedge them. Options flow is the trades printing today. MomoEdge has both in one plan, and PRISM can count today's trades that filled at the bid or the ask as gamma.

How often do the levels update?

While the market is open, the GEX levels on the chart update about every 3 minutes and the PRISM grid reloads about every 30 seconds. Open interest is counted once a day, overnight.

Is GEX a prediction?

No. It is an estimate of where hedging pressure may sit, built on an assumption about how dealers are positioned. Price can run through any level, and a fast move can get ahead of the levels. Use it to decide where to look, together with your own plan and risk.
